2-Alarm Fire Burns At Popular Pikesville Restaurant : Pikesville, MD - July 8, 2009 - A two-alarm fire in the storage area of a popular Pikesville restaurant Wednesday afternoon July 8th broke out just as dinnertime was getting underway . Baltimore County’s 911 center received a phone call just before 5 p.m. reporting an electrical fire in a storage area of the Suburban House, in the 900 block of Reisterstown Road, said Elise Armacost, BCoFD spokesperson. The officer on first arriving BCoFD Engine 2 (Pikesville career station) reported heavy flames and smoke were coming from the building and requested a second alarm. Approximately 35 patrons and employees had self-evacuated upon the fire department’s arrival and firefighters made an aggressive attack to limit the spread of the fire, Armacost said. “Crews did a very good job of knocking down the fire quickly,” she said, noting the storage area held kitchen supplies, canned goods, and overstock items. Suburban House dates back several decades as a landmark restaurant along Pikesville’s main strip. In recent years, adjacent businesses had closed and the restaurant had taken over the spaces next to their main dining area. Members of the Baltimore County Fire Investigation Division were on the scene searching for the cause and origin of the fire, Armacost said, noting an employee heard popping sounds and smelled smoke in the storage area just before seeing flames. Third Alarm High Rise Fire in Towson : Towson, MD – May 11, 2008 – Just before 1 p.m. on Mother’s Day, Baltimore County Fire Department Engine 101 and Truck 1 responded to 500 Virginia Avenue (Virginia Towers) for a fire alarm sounding in the high-rise residential building. When units arrived, they discovered an electrical fire burning underground adjacent to the building, which extended into a second-floor electrical room.

Interior crews reported heavy smoke, requested a full fire box and a priority response from Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE). As the smoke intensified, command requested an additional two engines and one truck and a medical strike team (additional ambulances) and began evacuating residents of the lower floors.

An estimated 300 residents, many of them seniors and/or handicapped individuals, live in the building, although officials are unsure how many were home during the fire due to the holiday. Residents who were not ordered to evacuate were told to shelter in place, and many could be seen at their open windows during the incident.

Crews monitoring carbon monoxide levels reported readings were at 600 parts per million on the 11th floor at one time during the incident.

The incident escalated to a third alarm response, bringing about 25 pieces of equipment and 120 fire personnel to the scene, said BCoFD Division Chief Michael Robinson. This is the second electrical fire at this building in the past nine months, with the last incident occuring in August 2007.

The Baltimore County Office of Emergency Management responded to the scene to assist evacuated residents, and officials opened an emergency shelter at the nearby Bykota Senior Center. Due to power remaining out in the building, residents were unable to stay in their apartments on Sunday evening; some stayed with family while others were temporarily relocated to a nearby motel.

Towson 2nd Alarm Apartment Fire : Baltimore County, MD firefighters fought this 2-alarm fire at the Kenilworth at Charles Apartments on Donington Circle in the early morning hours of Friday, March 21. The first call came in to 911 at 5:46 a.m. stating an apartment fire, followed by multiple additional calls. When first arriving units from Towson Station #1 arrived they found the third floor (top level) apartment heavily involved in fire (The only occupant self evacuated but was later transported via ambulance to Greater Baltimore Medical Center for smoke inhalation). The incident quickly escalated to a second alarm, bringing additional fire department resources to the scene. With an aggressive fire attack crews confined the fire to the apartment of origin, however other apartments sustained smoke & water damage. Officials said unattended cooking was the cause of the fire which began when the occupant decided to cook french fries and left a pan of oil unattended on the stove. The occupant told investigators that he tried to extinguish the fire with a blanket when he returned to the kitchen and found the grease aflame, but could not. He then opened a door to try to dissipate the smoke, but the rush of air fed the fire and made it more intense. At that point, he evacuated the building. Several Towson University students rent the apartment but they were away on spring break and the occupant was a male friend who they allowed to stay in the apartment while they were out of town. The roof collapsed above the fire apartment and the adjacent unit, making those apartments uninhabitable. The Baltimore County Office of Emergency Management was on the scene assessing the needs of between four and 12 residents.

Apartment Fire with Multiple Rescues : Several Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company members are credited with helping rescue 10 civilians from a suspicious and smoky apartment fire in Company 32’s first due on Thursday afternoon, January 3rd.

Shortly before 5 p.m., PVFC Engine 321, Squad 322, and Tower 323 were alerted with other units for a reported apartment fire at 6910 Marsue Drive, in the Millbrook Park Apartments complex, a 2-23 box known as “Little Russia.” A number of fire units were already in the area, as just a few minutes earlier crews were called to two other apartment buildings in the complex for fires, which turned to be small and suspicious in nature.

Baltimore County Fire Dept. Engine 2 quickly reported smoke showing, and responding crews found many residents trying to escape via balconies. Engine 321 FADO Bart Schanberger and firefighters David Kushner and Donald Rubin stretched an 1 ¾” hoseline to assist E2 with attacking the fire in a basement storage room, while firefighter Lou Schaller began effecting rescues in the front of the building via ground ladders. Firefighters from BCoFD Truck 18 and Engine 19 made several additional rescues. Fire extended from the basement up to the second floor, with heavy smoke throughout the 3-story building.

FADO Chad Hipsley positioned Tower 323 at the side of the building and raised the bucket to the roof, while Lt. Justin Schumer and firefighters Josh Schumer and Josh Friedman initiated search and rescue. The Tower crew rescued multiple civilians from rear balconies, and working with career firefighters from Engine 3 rescued a woman from her third floor apartment while battling heavy smoke and intense heat conditions. Squad 322 assisted with scene lighting, salvage, and overhaul.

Baltimore City Fire Department Engine 29 (under the command of Captain Larry Goldberg, also a PVFC lieutenant) and Truck 27 also responded, as they were nearby on the city/county line on a smoke investigation related to the fire.

Evacuated residents were sheltered in a nearby community building, with the Baltimore County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management t assisting with relocation of about a dozen people.

Baltimore County fire investigators determined that that the series of fires was intentionally set, and the property owner is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

These incidents came at the end of a busy day for Company 32, as PVFC firefighters also had two working rescues during the afternoon – one in a 3-1 box at Windsor Mill Road and Gartside Avenue, and a second on the outer loop of Interstate 695 between exits 21 & 20.

2nd Alarm Townhouse Fire in Middle River, MD : Memorial Day 2007 turned dangerous for residents in Middle River, MD when a fire apparently caused by an accidental BBQ propane tank destroyed two townhomes on Kemsley Court. Firefighters on Baltimore County’s eastside were called shortly before 1 p.m. and Tower 209 (White Marsh Volunteers) reported heavy smoke visible from the White Marsh Mall, about 3 miles away.

First-arriving Engine 12 laid several lines and crews attempted an aggressive attack. “Firefighters found heavy fire from the rear corner house and fire showing through the roof,” said BCoFD Batallion Chief Joe Fannon. “The fire was progressing pretty well when we first got on the scene.”

The resident of the end-unit townhome was cooking on a rear deck when he noticed fire under the grill, Chief Fannon said. The fire quickly grew in intensity, fueled by the escaping propane, and consumed the rear deck and much of the townhome and an adjacent exposure. The propane tank exploded and was found about four houses away.

Two firefighters were transported to area hospitals for evaluation of minor injuries, and the home’s resident was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Crews were hampered by high heat and humidity and emergency medical personnel set up a rehab station near the command post.
